how fast can you expire a cache key?

If I have hundreds of thousands to millions of pages in a web application,
and the pages are being updated at a rate of a few hundred per second (and
thus require the cache to be invalidated), is this a reasonable level of
cache expiration that I hit varnish with?

Would love to hear the high end of cache expiration that others are doing.
